About the Accounting Area at the Costello College of Business

The accounting area faculty strive to make George Mason University's accounting program the preeminent accounting program in the metropolitan Washington, D.C., region.

Accounting Program Mission
The mission of the George Mason Accounting Program is to provide our diverse student body with a high-quality professional education that enhances their knowledge and skills and prepares them to become ethical and successful contributors to the Accounting profession both locally and globally. Integral to achieving this mission is advancing Accounting knowledge through faculty scholarship, investing in the professional growth of our faculty and students, and fostering partnerships with the Accounting profession and other stakeholders.  

Accounting Program Goals
We are committed to offering a curriculum that will help our students:  

  • Build conceptual foundations of Accounting and an understanding of Accounting processes, systems, and practices and their application to organizations in a global society;

  • Enhance their analytical capabilities, critical thinking, ethical decision making, and communications skills; and  

  • Demonstrate ability to effectively use current technology.

We are committed to providing an inclusive environment for:

  • Disseminating Accounting scholarship through faculty intellectual contributions to discipline-based research, Accounting practice, and learning and pedagogical research;

  • Providing opportunities and incentives for the professional development of faculty and students; and

  • Cultivating and maintaining professional relationships among students, faculty, alumni, employers, the Accounting Advisory Council, and other Accounting program patrons and external stakeholders.  

  • Completion of the BS in Business – Accounting Concentration or the Accounting Certificate Program in combination with the MS in Accounting and/or Graduate Certificate Program(s) will prepare our graduates to qualify for professional certifications such as Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), Certified Government Financial Manager (CGFM), and Certified Fraud Examiner (CFE).

Accounting Area Academic Programs

The Accounting Area's academic programs prepare students for professional careers in public, private, and governmental accounting. 

Accounting Area Graduate Certificates

Our graduate accounting certificate programs offer opportunities for accounting professionals to acquire additional education in emerging fields. The accounting certificate programs can also serve as an entrance pathway to our master's in accounting program. Each certificate program is 12 credits, and courses qualify towards the 150 hours of academic credit needed to sit the CPA exam.
